Renewals
Katie Beckett isn't permanent. Both Medicaid eligibility and the level of care are reviewed again on a schedule set in your approval. You'll get a fresh packet to complete, including updated doctor's forms.
- Start the renewal as soon as it arrives.
- Update your address in Georgia Gateway so letters reach you.
- If GAPP is involved, tell your agency when Katie Beckett is up for renewal.
If you're denied
Read the reason
A denial usually comes down to level of care, cost-effectiveness or missing paperwork. The fix depends on which one.
Act within 30 days
For a level of care denial, you have 30 days to send more information or appeal.
Strengthen the records
Ask the doctor for a detailed letter about your child's daily care, and add therapy notes, evaluations or an IEP.
Appeal if needed
Appeals go to DCH Legal Services, then can go to an Administrative Law Judge hearing and a final agency review.
Turning 19
Katie Beckett ends with the month your child turns 19. Many young adults with disabilities qualify for Medicaid another way, often through SSI, where only their own income counts after 18. Start that application several months early so there's no gap, especially if your child relies on GAPP, which continues until 21.
Questions
How long do we have to respond to a denial?
If the level of care is denied, Georgia's policy gives families 30 days to send more information or appeal. Check your letter for the exact date.
How often does Katie Beckett renew?
Coverage and the level of care are reviewed on a schedule. Your approval letter says when. Watch your mail and Georgia Gateway so a missed renewal doesn't end coverage.
