Katie Beckett GeorgiaGeorgia's Katie Beckett Medicaid, explained

TEFRA and the “deeming waiver” in Georgia, explained

Three names, one program. Here's what each one means.

Short answerTEFRA, the deeming waiver and Katie Beckett all refer to the same Georgia Medicaid path for children with significant disabilities, which doesn't count parents' income.

The terms

TermWhat it means
TEFRAThe Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982, the federal law that let states offer this option.
DeemingCounting parents' income and resources as if they belonged to the child. It's the standard Medicaid rule.
Deeming waiverSetting that rule aside, so only the child's own income and resources count.
Katie BeckettThe everyday name, after the child whose case led to the law.

What it isn't

Despite the word "waiver," Katie Beckett isn't a home and community services waiver with its own service list. It gives your child regular Georgia Medicaid. Services like GAPP in-home nursing are then requested separately.
